Most technology today is designed to steal your attention.

Infinite scrolls, red notification badges, autoplaying videos, and FOMO-driven algorithms are all weapons in the “attention economy.” The goals of the engineers are simple: keep you on the screen for as long as possible.

When we built Becoming, we realized that you can’t build a better self using tools that thrive on your distraction.

We chose a different blueprint: Calm Technology.

What is Calm Technology?

The term was coined by Xerox PARC researchers Mark Weiser and John Seely Brown. The core principle is that technology should require the smallest possible amount of attention and should disappear into the background when not in use.

Calm Tech doesn’t scream for your focus. It waits for your intention.

The Pillars of Calmness in Becoming

We applied three specific Calm Tech principles to the design of the Becoming app:

1. The Periphery vs. The Center

Technology should inform but not overwhelm. In Becoming, your identity and habits are presented clearly and simply. We don’t use flashy animations or cluttered dashboards. Information stays in the “periphery” until you are ready to bring it into the “center” of your focus.

2. Notification Intentionality

A red badge is a biological trigger for stress. That’s why Becoming’s notifications are designed to be anchors, not interrupts. They are reminders of the person you chose to be, arriving at the times you specified. If you don’t need them, they don’t appear.

3. Positive Reinforcement without Addiction

We use dopamine correctly. Instead of an infinite scroll of variable rewards, we provide a single, satisfying checkmark. The reward is for the effort, not the engagement. Once you’re done, the app encourages you to put the phone down and live your life.

Why Calmness Leads to Better Habits

Habit formation requires a calm mind. When you are stressed or reactive, you fall back into your oldest, easiest patterns.

By using a tool that respects your mental space, you maintain the “Quiet Mind” necessary to choose the harder, better path. You move from reactivity (responding to pings) to intentionality (following your blueprint).

The Goal is Absence

The ultimate success of Becoming is not that you spend 2 hours a day in the app. It’s that you spend 2 minutes in the app to anchor your identity, and then 23 hours and 58 minutes living that identity in the real world.

We didn’t build an app to hold your hand. We built a compass to show you the way.

TIP

Audit Your Digital Tools Look at the apps on your home screen. Do they serve your intention, or do they steal your attention? If an app makes you feel anxious or distracted, it’s not a tool; it’s a cost. Seek out Calm Tech alternatives.
